Why Organic - The choice to go organic at Badia a Coltibuono stems from a desire to respect and enhance the true identity of this thousand-year-old place. It's a deep-rooted identity, preserved in the manuscripts of the monks, the farm’s old ledgers, and the family diaries kept in our "Library of Passions." For centuries, the estate was self-sufficient and managed in harmony with nature's rhythms—an equilibrium we now feel a responsibility to honor. Returning to organic farming is not just a production choice, but an act of coherence with the history and values that guide us. Our transition began 40 years ago, in 1985, well before official certifications even existed. We eliminated herbicides and insecticides, among the first in Tuscany to take this path. It was a pioneering choice, born of a clear vision and a strong sense of responsibility. After decades of intensive agriculture, the cost in terms of soil health, product quality, and sustainability has become increasingly clear. We've chosen to reverse course: all our vineyards, olive groves, and crops now follow organic practices, in harmony with the environment. The results speak for themselves: our wine and oil are gaining in character, authenticity, and distinctiveness. They express the vital energy of these Chianti hills, telling the unique story of an inimitable land through their aromas, colors, and flavors.

The Vineyards

At Badia a Coltibuono, we cultivate Sangiovese and the historic grape varieties of Chianti Classico with the same respect and dedication that have defined this land for centuries. Our 70 hectares of vineyards host native clones that have been present since ancient times, testifying to the continuity of a thousand-year-old winemaking tradition.

To us, wine is born in the vineyard. Each vine is tended individually, from pruning to harvest, according to its specific needs. We believe that, like every person, each plant has its own story, which deserves to be understood and honored.

We carefully work the soil to keep it alive, fertile, and in balance. On hillside slopes prone to erosion, we practice grassing to protect the soil and support sustainable water management.

During the growing season, we constantly monitor the vines’ exposure to sunlight and air flow, performing targeted leaf thinning to ensure optimal ripening. Every action in the vineyard is done by hand, with respect and purpose, to ensure both health and quality.

We pay particular attention to the most promising plots, focusing our energy and expertise on producing grapes of outstanding quality. Here, every bunch is carefully selected, even if it means removing the less promising ones, to allow the best to fully express their potential.

Harvesting takes place in multiple phases, following the climate and the ideal ripeness of the grapes. In the cellar, we handle the grapes using gentle gravity-flow techniques, first introduced to Chianti by Badia a Coltibuono, which preserve the integrity of the berries and the value of their contents.
